Research Interests

My expertise areas are situated at the intersections of language learning, teaching, and assessment. Specifically, I am interested in the role of conversational interaction in language acquisition and development, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), and heritage language education. I am also interested in research design for causal inference such as interrupted time series and single case experiments.

Metacognitive Instruction in L2 Task Based Interaction

This project examines both the impact of a metacognitive instruction on L2 learners’ task engagement and the methodological consequences of alternative statistical model specifications in a quasi‐experimental context. The findings contribute to the ongoing methodological innovations in instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) by (a) empirically evaluating the efficacy of metacognitive instruction, and (b) identifying optimal analytic approaches for causal inference in short time series, longitudinal intervention research.

Task-Based Materials Development & Evaluation

This project focuses on designing and evaluating task-based materials for intermediate Vietnamese which investigates both learners’ perceptions and performance as well as teachers’ learning over time as they participate into a professional learning community.
